The AAM Welcomes the ICJ Order for Israel to Halt Rafah Offensive

The Alliance of Australian Muslims (AAM) expresses its strong support for the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) recent decision to order Israel to stop its offensive in Rafah, Gaza.

The ICJ, the top judicial body of the United Nations, has ordered Israel to immediately stop its military activities in Rafah, a city in southern Gaza. According to Judge Nawaf Salam, the president of the ICJ, Israel must halt any actions in Rafah that could lead to the physical destruction of the Palestinian population.

The court highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Rafah, warning that it would worsen if Israel’s offensive continued, which has also referred to as “disastrous”.

Additionally, the ICJ ordered Israel to open the Rafah crossing for humanitarian aid, finding that Israel’s evacuation measures are insufficient to mitigate the severe risks faced by the Palestinian population.

This decision follows the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) recent application for arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes in Palestine.

The AAM urges the Australian Government to condemn Israel’s attacks on Palestinians, cease support for any defence operations with Israel, support the ICC’s arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant, back the ICJ case against Israel, and recognise the State of Palestine.

AAM also thanks South Africa and other countries for their courageous stance against Israel’s aggressive actions and appreciates global and Australian support for the Palestinian cause.
